2010 Robin Hood DVD & Blu-Ray Release Date - Official Announcement from Universal Pictures

Following its theatrical release nearly two months ago, the 2010 Robin Hood has been given an official DVD and Blu-Ray release date. Today, Universal Pictures announced via a press release that Robin Hood, one of the studio's only $100+ million earners at the box office, would be released to the Home Video Market on DVD as well as Blu-Ray on September 21, 2010.

According to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, there will be three editions of Robin Hood that they will debut.

First is a Hi-Def Blu-Ray Combo Pack that will also include the DVD version of the film as well as digital copy that can be downloaded on a variety of devices.Second is a Two-Disc Special Edition DVD version, and third is simply a Single-Disc DVD release.

All three of these versions will include the theatrical released Robin Hood, as well as Director Ridley Scott's cut of the film with aproximately 15 minutes of additional never before seen un-rated footage.

The fact that all versions of Robin Hood will contain the Director's Cut, including the single-disc DVD, is something I see a major plus.

When compared to their theatrical release, I almost always perfer Director Ridley Soctt's cuts immensely more.

For examples sake, this was extremely evident with Kingdom of Heaven, another one of Scott's Medieval Historical Epic's.

The special-edition version of the film on Blu-Ray ran literally 50 minutes more than the theatrical release, which is about 30% longer than the version that was shown in theaters. In my opinion, this version trumped the cut-down theatrical release in almost every way.

In short, it conveyed the story much better, and gave a complete picture. Many times, studios will not release these extra-long cuts to movie theaters because it's not advantageous for them in terms of box office revenue.

Without getting into complex reasoning; Longer Running Rime equals Less Show-times in a Day which equals Less Box Office Revenue.

This isn't always the case, but many times it is. Plus, the difference between 2 hours and 25 minutes and 3 hours and 15 minutes is a undeniably substantial.

Back to the DVD and Blu-Ray release of the 2010 version of Robin Hood. If you are planning on purchasing the movie starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett, I strongly recommend picking up the Blu-Ray DVD Combo Pack.

It has both formats of the movies, a copious amount of additional features, and even if you don't have a Blu-Ray Player, it includes a Digital Copy of Robin Hood, which is the only edition of the release that will have it.

While the official cost of each version has yet to be stated, via Amazon, Best Buy, Wal-Mart of other various retailer, it shouldn't be much more than the other version and you get much more. When Robin Hood was released to theaters on May 14, 2010, it took in $36 million during its opening weekend at the box office, before finishing its domestic run with $105.07 million, making its the second highest grossing Medieval Times movie of all-time, behind Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and its $165.49 million gross t earned in 1991.

Internationally, Robin Hood had a far more impressive gross and has to date taken in over $204 million, giving it a worldwide box office total of $309.87 million.

Now, by all means this is a very hefty worldwide total, but the fact remains that it has still yet to turn a profit. The reason for this is because how much was spent on the film. According to various sources, Robin Hood reported had a budget of $200 million, and that's after Tax Credits and Incentives.

Additionally, that figure doesn't include the amount that was spent on advertising and marketing the film, as well as print costs. Another major part of the equation is that Robin Hood's worldwide revenue is split with movie theaters.

That said, Robin Hood has yet to turn a profit, and even with TV Rights as well as licensing, it will need very strong DVD sales numbers if Universal Pictures is going to see a profit anytime soon.
